About Me
My name is Amarante Southard. I am Deaf, transgender fem-presenting nonbinary, and queer. I’m also currently a barista at Signing Starbucks in Washington DC, US, and a freelancer Deaf interpreter. American Sign Language (ASL) is my first language and I am somewhat fluent in English as my second language.
I am very passionate about technology, video games, and linguistics. Growing up I’ve been inspired by various technology everywhere, especially when I tinker with anything software-level and sometimes what’s in the hardware. Video games are also a great inspiration to me considering I learn a lot of real-life situations from them and helped me learning English a lot.
And since 2021, I greatly fell in love with sign languages and their cultures from all the over world, making me want to purse my career in the linguistics while still maintaining my interest in technology and video games. What made me fall in love with linguistics is due to my exposure to the signing community within virtual reality (all explained in a blog post).
